Social media & freedom of expression

A couple of weeks back I read Wired Magazine’s article titled “The Web is Dead.” After reading the article, I was convinced that apps were a curse to the freedom of expression and experience on the internet & we all needed to re-embrace the eloquence of hypertext. With the recent events in Egypt and the evidence that social media has been a boon to those organizing political actions, it’s hard to deny that the web can be a powerful tool in the hands of the people. So powerful that the Egyptian government has shut down Facebook and Twitter and imposed a curfew. But as IT blogger Matt Hartley points out in this article, there are ways around this network blockade. One way is to make use of apps on mobile devices. They can smartly bypass the blockade because they don’t require authentic to post or update. So, maybe I’m wrong about apps and the current state of the Web. Hmmmm.
