Let’s invert totalitarianism

Ok, a play on words. Playing with the theme of a previous post. I’m not trying to be cute or frivolous here. I do think that democracy, as we know it has been on a death march, and we are waking up to a new order. There has been a push from the corporatized demagogues that have formed governments here in North America these last couple of decades to lull us into sleep. It has been working, we have been sleeping and not doing much of anything as the civil liberties that have bolstered our civil societies have crumbled at the hands of inverted totalitarianism. Is it a pendulum swing? Are we swinging back to a civil and just society? Is it the dying of a weak system, the taking root of an unkind system that will cause us to swing back?

I wrote a post on inverted totalitarianism almost a year and a half ago. Now, here in Canada, we’re on the cusp of inverting that inversion and slipping out the shadows. Election time. Yes, I still believe that each individual casting a vote can make a difference right here and now in this election. I agree with some of my peers that many times elections don’t seem to matter as most leaders, parties and policies are variations on the same theme and nothing much changes. This federal election in Canada is different. Our current government has destroyed so much and damaged so much more beyond repair. We, the masses, have noticed. How else do you explain a 71% increase in voter turnout at advance polls? 71% increase! Keep in mind that the advance polls were only open for 4 days over a holiday weekend. That to me is evidence that we are waking up. That we are shrugging off sleep and collectively wanting something to shift. That change is in the air.

Chris Hedges is right – this is the revolutionary moment.
