In a bid to raise awareness of the crisis surrounding the decline of bee and pollinator populations, Vancouver singer songwriter Kele Fleming is donating 100% of the proceeds from sale of her single Vanishing of Bees to the David Suzuki Foundation beginning May 15th thru June 30th. The single is being released on United Nations World Bee Day Monday, May 20th and will be available on the usual platforms.

Bee populations have been decimated worldwide due to huge colony die-offs caused by pesticide use, disease, loss of habitat and other factors. This creates huge problems for farmers who rely on bees to pollinate crops. It’s been estimated that bees contribute nearly half a billion dollars to the BC economy each year in pollination services and globally they are seen as playing a vital role in staving off world hunger.

United Nations World Bee Day was first observed in 2018 to draw attention to the importance of bees and animal pollinators in the production of food crops around the world.

In March 2019 CBC News reported that this year has been another difficult one for the bees. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/beekeepers-facing-tough-year-as-hive-losses-mount-1.5040299

The David Suzuki Foundation launched the Butterflyway Project in 2017 to encourage schools, city agencies and home owners to plant bee and butterfly friendly plants in gardens and yards across Canada. https://davidsuzuki.org/take-action/act-locally/butterflyway/

This was part of the ongoing work the foundation has done which also includes campaigning to ban neonicotinoid pesticides and to account for bees in urban planning.https://www.straight.com/news/1216436/david-suzuki-cities-hold-key-reversing-bee-decline
