Babes in the Woods

My cousin Steve was kind enough to make a trip to the Woodlawn Cemetery in Dartmouth to take some photos of the grave of the Nova Scotian version of the Babes in the Woods folk tale. The were 2 little girls (ancestors on my dad’s side of the family), Margaret & Elizabeth Meagher, who got lost in the woods outside Dartmouth and perished. This is a story my aunts told us as kids along with many other stories. We would sit around the kitchen table listening drinking too strong Red Rose tea listening to the adults telling tales about the old days. This story and a number of others from those days were the inspiration for “Meagher’s Children”, a song off the new WIR album.

Was just at the burial site in Woodlawn .
You’ll be glad to know that is one of the best maintained graveyards I’ve ever been to the sites are well looked after and the old tombstones from the 1800’s that have broken and/or fallen over have been rebuilt reinforced and reinstalled… Nice to see the respect the grounds keepers have for their “Tennant’s”

When growing up as a little girl I lived in Woodlawn and would occasionally see Margaret in her blue dress. Yesterday I learned about this story for the first time . I am also down the line related to these girls, through there mothers father who’s is a power. My family also came from Ireland and now resides in Easter passage. I will be visiting the girls today for the first time
