About the song
‘The Last Apple’ is a rolicking folk rock song where Kele embraces her identity as a protest singer. This song riffs on some of the ideas and images from Joni Mitchell’s song “Big Yellow Taxi.” In the song, the big yellow taxi is summoned to help deliver a message that we don’t want to hear – “no ride is for free.” Meaning, we don’t get a free ride on Earth. Drawing inspiration from Mitchell’s timeless lament over paving paradise, this song rallies listeners to stand up and fight for the preservation of our planet before it’s all lost and before we fall..
The big yellow taxi’s here
Jump in if you dare
Everything Joni said is clear
No one rides for free
We don’t know what we got
Till it’s too late
We celebrate as we disintegrate
Falling…
This folk rock protest song emerges as a poignant call to arms against the relentless march of corporate greed and environmental destruction. With guitar chords and organ swells that echo the spirit of 1960s protest folk, the song’s melody weaves a tapestry of hope and defiance.
